JUNE JEON

Assistant Professor of Sociology

Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST)

Welcome!

I am an Assistant Professor of Sociology at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), Republic of Korea. I received my Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (joint-PhD with Environmental Studies). I have been affiliated in the Holtz Center of Science and Technology Studies as well. I have been using qualitative ethnography, computational social science, and theoretical analysis to study science, social inequality, and environmental crisis.

I am actively working on multiple projects in three main research areas. First, I study scientific institutions with in-depth qualitative ethnography. I investigate the interplay between social powers and scientific research to understand the macro and micro dynamics of socio-technoscientific changes. Second, I study a macro-scale inequality within the scientific field and a gap between the scientific field and social demands. I have been utilizing large language models to connect Science and Technology Studies (STS) and Science of Science (SOS). Third, I study civil society's engagement with environmental problems in various settings to understand polarized views on environmental crisis, disinvestment in environmental sciences, and slow environmental violence.

My works have appeared in the Social Studies of Science, New Media and Society, Agriculture and Human Values, Sociological Inquiry, Engaging Science, Technology, and Society, and several outlets. You can find a link to my Google Scholar page here. My research has been recognized by awards from the American Sociological Association (ASA) and the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP). Before joining KAIST, I was an assistant professor of sociology at Chungnam National University, Republic of Korea, and was a postdoctoral fellow in civic science at Tufts University's Tisch College of Civic Life.
